Strong, statewide efforts to preserve Wisconsin's two decades-old recycling law received an additional boost Friday, March 25, 2011, with the release of a letter from recycling industry groups and many Wisconsin communities asking Governor Scott Walker to retain recycling in the state budget.
The letter was signed by representatives of the Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin, the Badger chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America, Wisconsin Counties Solid Waste Association, the Governor's advisory Council on Recycling, and dozens of Wisconsin cities, towns, villages, and environmental groups. In all, more than 150 entities are represented in the letter asking the governor to reconsider a budget proposal that would remove the mandate requiring Wisconsin communities to run recycling programs; it would also end a state subsidy that helps pay for it.
In 2010, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, that subsidy amounted to $29.3 million dollars, or 27% of the total cost for Wisconsin communities to run their recycling programs. The savings to the state would be diverted to a new economic development program.
